Sculptural Features & Materials
- Carving & Wood Density: Masterfully carved from a dense, heavy hardwood—likely lignum vitae, prized historically for its exceptional durability and fine grain—the figure exhibits a rich, warm patina with contrasting dark tones highlighting its facial contours.
- Expressive Details: Features realistic inset glass eyes, deeply carved facial wrinkles, textured flews with stippled whisker pores, and prominent exposed teeth made from contrasting light-colored material (bone).
- Collar Detail: The base of the neck is accented with a fitted leather collar complete with a miniature buckle and red stitched trim.
Mechanism & Internal Structure
- Hinged Head: A brass hinge secured to the back allows the upper portion of the head to lift open smoothly.
- Internal Reservoir: Opening the head reveals a fitted internal compartment housing a brass secondary cover.
- Thumb-Release Lid: The inner metal lid is fitted with a spring-actuated thumb lever, which snaps back to reveal a small removable glass inkwell insert contained within.
Origin & Provenance
- Markings: The wood is impressed with the mark “DEPOSE” (French for registered design/patent), confirming French manufacture, likely dating to the 1880s–1890s during the height of Belle Époque novelty desk accessories.
