This is a luxurious 19th-century French traveler’s writing set (nécessaire d’écriture) designed for the ultra-wealthy elite of the Napoleon III era. Blending neoclassical Empire style with opulent Second Empire decorative craftsmanship, this set is housed in its original custom-fitted case clad in dark, exotic-grain embossed leather. Featuring finely chased gilt-bronze (ormolu) fittings, a heavy cut-crystal inkwell with pen rests, and a complete ensemble of matching desk tools, this set represents the pinnacle of 19th-century Parisian luxury craft.

1. The Presentation Traveling Case

• Exterior: Heavy wooden chest bound in dark alligator/crocodile-patterned embossed leather with an ornate brass keyhole escutcheon.
• Interior: The underside of the lid features a plush, padded white/cream silk lining. The lower tray is lined in vibrant emerald-green velvet, custom-recessed and form-fitted to hold each individual component securely during transit.

2. Baccarat Cut-Crystal Inkwell (Encrier)

• Crystal Well: A heavy, square-cut clear crystal block with exceptional clarity and weight, featuring dual integrated, curved pen-rest grooves molded into the top surface on either side of the collar.
• Ormolu Mounts: Ensconced in a rectangular gilt-bronze gallery featuring neoclassical vertical column fretwork, draped floral garlands (guirlandes), and four scrolled leaf feet.
• Lid: A thick, domed, hinged gilt lid richly chased with floral motifs and beaded border patterns.

3. Desktop Accessories

• Lidded Accessory / Stamp Box: Rectangular chest decorated with dense, engine-turned (guilloché) geometric engraving, applied floral swags on the lid and front panel, standing on four scrolled acanthus feet.
• Rocker Blotter (Tampon Buvard): Coordinated guilloché top plate with applied floral swags, anchored by an ornate, urn-shaped gilt handle covered in deep floral reliefs. Retains its original layered paper/pad core edged in red felt.

4. Desk Implements

All four hand implements share matching architectural gilt-bronze handles formed of parallel fluted columns set in a flat rectangular openwork frame, centered by a raised floral/laurel garland:
