The bookmark pattern features typographical marks of the early printers and publishers of the 15th and 16th centuries. These marks are known as “colophons”. Colophons were used by early printers to identify themselves and their work. (Note: Colophons is from Greek via Latin and originally meant “finishing touch”). These emblems are encased in each frame and are said to be things Tiffany found meaningful, among them: a round central shield encloses a fleur-de-lis; branches with acorns; a cross; tree of life; palm tree; porpoise.
#864 – 4 ½” x 4 ½” x 2 ½” The first example shown displays cold-painting to the marks. Also shown is an example without the painting.
#1070 – 9” x 9” x 4” Large Bookmark inkwell with attached pen tray.
#1094 – 3” x 3” x 2 ½” – Small size
