Measuring 1 ⅜” diameter; 1 ¾” high

This sterling silver traveling inkwell was made by the American firm Black, Starr & Frost. When closed, the inkwell presents as a compact, cylindrical form. Its entire exterior surface is adorned with detailed repoussé floral patterns. This intricate hand-hammered work creates a rich tapestry of blooming flowers and intertwined leaves.

The inkwell features a two-step opening protocol: its top half is hinged, allowing it to swing open and reveal the interior. With the lid opened, a prominent, cylindrical silver cap is revealed. This screw-off cap is designed to provide a secure and airtight seal for the ink reservoir housed beneath. Upon unscrewing and removing this inner silver cap, the glass liner, which holds the ink, is now fully accessible.

The underside of the inkwell is clearly marked “Sterling,” confirming the purity of the silver. It also bears the name “Black, Starr & Frost,” identifying it as a product of one of America’s oldest and most respected jewelers and silversmiths, known for their high-quality luxury goods since the early 19th century.
