This Swiss Brienz hand-carved wooden figural inkwell depicts a sitting pug holding a dip pen in its mouth.
Physical Description
- Figure & Pose: The full-body carving depicts a seated pug with a curled tail, upright ears, and a wrinkled brow. Its mouth has a hole designed to hold a dip pen.
- Hinged Head & Well: The entire head hinges backwards at the collar line to reveal a white porcelain insert.
- Eyes & Details: The eyes are inset glass with dark pupils. Around its neck is a red collar with a metal buckle and raised studs.
- Dimensions: Stands approximately 4 inches () tall to the top of the head.
Origin & Dating
- Breed: Pug (characterized by the compact frame, flat-muzzled face, wrinkled forehead, and curled tail).
- Origin: Made in Brienz, Switzerland (Bernese Oberland region), famed for traditional “Black Forest” woodcarving craftsmanship.
- Period: Late 19th Century (c. 1880–1900).
