This inkwell is a figural sculpture of a rooster.

  • Material and Finish: The piece is made of a cast metal alloy, commonly referred to as pot metal. The rooster is well-sculpted, with a high level of detail in its feathers, comb, and wattle.
  • Inkwell: The rooster’s head is hinged at the neck. It lifts and tilts back to reveal the internal cavity where an inkpot would have been placed, making the head the lid for the inkwell.

Origin and Age

  • Origin: This piece likely was made in France. The rooster is the unofficial national symbol of France (le coq gaulois) and was a very popular subject for decorative objects produced there.
  • Approximate Age: The use of pot metal for detailed decorative items like this was common from the late 19th century through the early 20th century. The style and craftsmanship are consistent with the period between 1890 and 1920, when such naturalistic and whimsical desk accessories were highly fashionable.
