This inkstand marked “Robinson Pen-in-Ink” consists of three parts: a clear glass inkwell, a Bakelite cover with a pen receptacle, and a Catalin holder. This inkstand was patented on November 13, 1934, under Patent #1,980,878. Three examples in different colors (brownish-orange, brown, and green) are pictured.
The inkstand can be disassembled for replenishing the ink supply. One image shows the disassembled inkstand, which consists of a multi-faceted base, a clear glass ink reservoir, and a lid with an attached ink feeder. The Bakelite lid screws onto the glass reservoir to prevent spills and evaporation.
Bakelite: Bakelite is a type of early plastic, developed in the early 20th century. It is known for its electrical nonconductivity and heat-resistant properties, making it suitable for a variety of applications, including electrical insulators, radio and telephone casings, and kitchenware. Bakelite is a thermosetting phenol formaldehyde resin, formed from a condensation reaction of phenol with formaldehyde.
Catalin: Catalin is a brand name for a thermosetting polymer that is similar to Bakelite but differs in its manufacturing process. Catalin is made from phenol formaldehyde resin but is cast rather than molded, allowing for a wider range of colors and patterns. It was popular in the 1930s and 1940s for making jewelry, radios, and other decorative items.
