Owl’s Head Inkwell
- Material:
- Main Material: White metal – probably spelter. (A magnet does not stick).
- Eyes: Glass eyes. The glass eyes are inset.
- Weighting Material: A “concrete” type of mixture, likely plaster of Paris, is used to weight the base.
- Form:
- Owl’s Head: The inkwell is shaped like an owl’s head, with prominent brow ridges, a beak, and ear tufts.
- Hinged Top: The top section of the head, above the eyes, is hinged, allowing it to open and reveal the ink reservoir.
- Species of Owl:
- Likely a Horned Owl (Great Horned Owl or Similar): The prominent ear tufts (or “horns”) on the top of the head strongly suggest a horned owl species. The Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) is a common and recognizable example.
