Georgian miniature traveling writing boxes (“etui”) such as this one contained all the essentials for writing a letter or signing a document. Inside this metal etui, there is an inkwell, a pounce pot, and a chalcedony fob seal. The inkwell and pounce pot are decorated with Bilston enamel lids. (Bilston enamel refers to a type of decorative vitreous enamel that was produced in Bilston, England, during the 18th century). Their glass was made with a diagonal cut pattern. The box itself was worked with a loose woven strap design. Missing are pens or quills that would fit into the center holes.
