Description:

  • Case: The oval body is covered in dark burgundy Morocco leather (goatskin), which has a distinctive pebbled grain.
  • Decoration: Cherub/Putti print on the lid – although heavily darkened by aged varnish (a common issue with these antiques), the reddish flesh tones and composition suggest a classical scene, likely Raphael-style angels or an allegorical scene, which was very fashionable for ladies’ accessories in the 1880s.
  • Metal Band: A decorative nickel-silver band runs around the middle, featuring delicate engraved foliate or scroll patterns.

Interior & Functionality

  • The Inkwell Mechanism: The specific type of closure is known as a “pressure clasp” or “swing-arm” latch (rather than a simple wing nut).
    • How it works: The metal arm swings over the top of the inkwell lid. It is designed to act as a cam or spring, pressing the inner lid down with significant force against the glass rim. This created a hermetic seal to prevent the ink from leaking into your pocket or luggage.
  • The “Compendium” Features: Unlike a standard inkwell, this case contains two small metal tubes next to the inkpot. These hold:
  1. A miniature dip pen (nib holder).
  2. A miniature pencil.
  • Lining: The interior of the lid is lined with red silk, which, while worn, adds a touch of luxury and protects the glass insert.
