Jugendstil Art Nouveau Inkstand by Walter Scherf & Co.
- Object: Jugendstil Art Nouveau Inkstand / Inkwell (Schreibzeug)
- Maker: Walter Scherf & Co. (“Osiris” / “ISIS-Werke”)
- Origin: Nuremberg, Germany
- Date: c. 1905–1906
- Medium: Cast ISIS-metal (proprietary high-grade art pewter alloy), polished finish, complete with original glass insert.
Stylistic Analysis:
- Form & Geometry: The inkstand exhibits a symmetrical, fan-shaped footprint that marries organic Jugendstil fluidity with early geometric proto-Secessionist elements. The sloping wings act as built-in pen rests, featuring stylized geometric cartouches at the outer corners.
- Motifs: The central ink reservoir rises like a domed pavilion, capped with a stylized pinecone finial. Radiating fluted ribs cascade downward from the inkwell housing toward a beaded and interlaced floral-garland hemline along the front base. The front and collar of the reservoir are embellished with organic, whiplash-curve foliate elements (reminiscent of peacock feathers or unfolding seed pods), quintessential to the German Art Nouveau aesthetic.
- Functionality: The hinged domed lid lifts to reveal the original glass insert. The reverse underside is struck with the firm’s distinct factory hallmarks: OSIRIS, the model production number 1531, and the alloy stamp ISIS.
Attribution & Manufacturer
- Manufacturer: Metallwarenfabrik für Kleinkunst Walter Scherf & Co. (commonly known as Osiris), located in Nuremberg, Germany.
- Founders: Founded in 1899 by Friedrich August Scherf and his son, Walter Scherf (who previously worked at the prominent Art Nouveau metalwork firm Orivit).
- Dating: Produced around 1905–1906 (Model number 1531 falls late in the factory’s active production period, which ran from 1899 to 1909).
Understanding the Marks (OSIRIS 1531 ISIS)
- OSIRIS: This was the primary trade name/brand used by Walter Scherf & Co. for their high-end Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) decorative metalware and pewter lines.
- 1531: The specific catalog/model design number assigned by the factory.
- ISIS: In 1902, the firm developed and introduced a specialized, higher-grade pewter alloy marketed under the name “ISIS-metal”. Items stamped with ISIS indicate that they were cast using this specific proprietary metal composition.
- Timeline Note: In 1906, the company officially changed its corporate name from Osiris to ISIS-Werke GmbH, meaning pieces bearing both the OSIRIS and ISIS designations sit right at the transitional peak of this renaming period (circa 1905–1906).
