The pressed glass inkwell is held in a cast iron inkstand. The irregularly shaped base features incised decorations, including a small animal that looks like a cat or a ferret. The lid is attached to a bar on the frame and lifts upright when in use. On top is a three-station pen rack. In the rear is a slot to hold letters or a blotter. The backplate has a design of open arches. On the bottom, it is marked “Pat. Nov 25, 1879”. On the left side is a pen wipe. On the right side is a container holding needles. Needles were used like staples to bind sheets of paper together.
