Description
This figural inkwell features a central, square-bodied container with a soft, rounded-edge profile. It is flanked by two Scottish Terriers (Scotties), which are cast in a seated, alert position with their heads turned slightly outward.
- The Container: The main body has a prominent stepped base and a matching lift-off lid (non-hinged). The lid is topped with a simple knob handle.
- The Dogs: The Scotties are detailed, capturing the breed’s characteristic wiry coat, upright ears, and sturdy posture. They have a darker black finish, which provides a contrast against the warm, aged brass tone of the central well.
- Interior: It retains its original clear glass insert.
- Construction: The underside features a heavy metal base plate secured by four screws.
- Material: While it has the appearance of brass, this piece was made from spelter metal and then plated in brass. The wear on the high points of the container suggests a heavy brass plating over a denser base metal.
- Age: This piece likely dates to the late 1920s or 1930s. Scottish Terriers became an American obsession during this era, famously bolstered by President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s dog, Fala.
