This gilt bronze pheasant is depicted with intricate detailing that captures the texture of its feathers. He rests on a black marble base. The head is hinged and opens to reveal the original cobalt blue glass inkwell inside. The beak is articulated and provides a holding place for a pen. The inkwell is attributed to Henri Lechesne (1811-1888), a French sculptor known for his detailed animal bronzes.
