This is an unmarked single inkstand with a cut-glass inkwell and a hinged, silver-plated lid. The inkwell is set on a silver-plated base, which is octagonal with a raised, decorative border. The cut-glass inkwell has a pattern of vertical flutes or ribs.
The Designs on the Base
The decorative elements on the base are all related to fox hunting. They form a highly specific and symbolic tableau:
- The Fox’s Head: A highly detailed fox’s head is sculpted in three dimensions, protruding from the front of the base.
- The Stirrup: To the right of the fox’s head is what appears to be a stirrup, a piece of riding gear.
- The Hunting Sack: The object on the left, next to the fox’s head, is a hunting sack or pouch, which would have been used to carry supplies.
This inkstand is a classic example of late Victorian or Edwardian-era desk accessories, which frequently used sporting themes.
