This inkstand depicts a tender moment from rural life. The piece is mounted on a simple rectangular base and has a bronze-colored finish applied to the white metal.
- The Figures: A young farm girl, dressed in a long skirt and head covering, is seated on a water trough. She cradles the head of a cow in her lap. The cow’s head is detailed, with subtle features on its face and horns.
- The Inkwell: The inkwell is integrated into the sculptured base. On the left, a hinged rectangular section lifts open to reveal a cavity where the inkpot would be placed.
- The Theme and Material: The inkstand’s subject matter is a pastoral or rural scene, a popular theme in decorative arts. The use of white metal with a bronze finish allowed for the creation of detailed pieces at a more accessible price point than solid bronze while still achieving a similar aesthetic. The piece is marked “Germany”.
