This inkwell was made from ebonized wood in the form of an elephant’s head. It has a smooth polished finish with detailed carvings in the folds of the trunk, the large ears, and the wrinkled texture of the forehead and cheeks. The elephant’s eyes are made of round beads of glass. Ivory tusks protrude from the sides. The back of the elephant’s head is hinged, allowing it to be opened, revealing the inner inkwell compartment. The actual ink container inside the elephant’s head features a spring-loaded lid, opened by pressing a latch.
