Detailed Description

  • The Eagle: The focal point is a finely cast eagle with wide, outstretched wings, captured in a powerful and alert pose. The casting is detailed, showing individual feathers and a sharp, open beak.
  • The Domed Lid: The eagle is mounted on a hinged, dome-shaped lid embossed with intricate floral and acanthus leaf motifs. This dome lifts back to reveal the internal well.
  • The Base: The inkwell sits on a six-pointed star base. The points of the star feature elaborate filigree and rococo-style openwork. Behind the dome, there is a decorative, upright filigree panel that serves as a backrest for the lid when opened.
  • Interior: Inside, there is a removable metal liner designed to hold the ink.

Here is how an eBay seller out of Ukraine described this inkwell: “A rare antique bronze inkwell WWI, which belonged to a regimental clerk in the Kaiser’s army. Bronze. In excellent condition. Patinated. The lid features a bronze sculpture of a soaring eagle (Very beautiful and detailed. The eagle’s eyes are made of crystal). Large and prestigious. Opens and closes easily. Would look great in a collection of WWI memorabilia or on an antique desk.”

The seller provided no provenance for the inkwell. It sold for $359.
