Inkwell in the form of a terrier dog wearing a sailor hat and collar, and is smoking a pipe. Lots of details in the casting and painting. His head tips back to reveal an ink reservoir.
This terrier is similar to several identical-looking dogs in different costumes and poses, primarily dressed as sailors and smoking a pipe or cigar. Some attribute these to Georg Heyde & Company in Dresden, Germany, but this has never been confirmed. Possibly they’re Austrian, given their anthropomorphic whimsey. Or, because of the Bulldog and sailing themes, maybe they are British.
Estimated value: $225
