Figural, hand-painted Bulldog dressed as a sailor inkwell and pen wipe. Sitting in a tub, smoking a pipe, he tilts back for access to the inkwell. The pen wipe is located in the dog’s hat.
These Bulldogs are similar to several identical-looking bulldogs in different costumes and poses, primarily dressed as sailors and smoking a pipe or cigar. Some attribute these to Georg Heyde & Company in Dresden, Germany, but this has never been confirmed. Possibly they’re Austrian, given their anthropomorphic whimsey. Or, because of the Bulldog and sailing theme, maybe they are British.
Estimate values: inkwell – $225; pen wipe – $250
Inkwell sold for $234 in November 2024
