This hungry Bulldog (or pug?) has a bib around his neck tied in the back with a bow and is chomping away at a bone. The bib serves as a pen tray. Lots of detail captured in the expression of his face with its glass eyes, his teeth, the texture of the fur, and folds in the bib. The dog’s head is hinged at the neck and tips back for you to dip your pen in the original glass inkwell inside.
This inkwell is marked JB 683, for Jennings Brothers of Bridgeport, Connecticut. This well-respected foundry opened in the 1890s and remained open until the 1950s. The company produced artistic, functional metal works of the finest design and quality. The work is exemplary, requiring in its detail the meticulous handiwork of expert artists, sculptors, and craftsmen.
