Description
- The Scene: The centerpiece features a recumbent dog cast in brass. The dog is attached by a miniature chain to a spiked iron-style fence.
- The Inkwells: Flanking the dog on either side are two matching square-cut glass inkwells with beveled edges. These wells sit securely within four-pronged metal holders.
- The Lids: Each inkwell is topped with a circular, hinged lid.
- Material: The metal components are cast brass, while the inkwells are crafted from heavy lead crystal.
Origin and Identification
- Where Made: Likely England (Birmingham). Birmingham was the primary hub for such decorative “fancy brass” desk accessories during the 19th century.
- When Made: Circa 1870–1890. The style of the spiked fence and the specific “brilliant cut” pattern on the glass lids are hallmarks of the Late Victorian era.
