This pretty cloisonné inkwell was probably made in China for export to the west. I has a somewhat squat shape for stability, and features colorful enameled flowers. The main metal is brass or bronze. The lid is hinged; the original insert is enameled on the outside and has a rim that allows it to fit snugly in the inkwell.
This inkwell is not marked; it was either made and exported before The McKinley Tarrif Act of 1890 (requiring that imported items be marked with country of origin) or it had a paper label at one time. This inkwell is not much older than 1890, however.
