Description of this novelty inkwell, made to resemble a champagne bottle stopper or cork.

  • Overall Form and Design: The inkwell mimics the iconic shape of a champagne cork, complete with its wire cage and foil top.
  • Cork Body: The lower portion, forming the main body of the inkwell, is decorated to look like natural cork. It has a textured, mottled appearance with variations in tone, effectively simulating the granular surface of real cork. A small button is visible on the side of this “cork” section and opens the lid when pressed.
  • Wire Configuration: Surrounding the transition from the cork-like base to the cap is a detailed configuration of twisted gold-toned wire. This wire simulates the traditional muselet or wire cage that secures a champagne cork and serves as the outer lid covering the inkwell.
  • Inner Lid and Glass Inkwell: As a typical feature of traveling inkwells designed to prevent leaks, this piece includes a second, inner lid covering the glass inkwell inside. This inner lid is also sprung open when released, adding a layer of security for the ink.
  • Marking: The only marking is on the inner lid, in the form of a dolphin wrapped around an anchor.
