Identification
- Manufacturer: Unattributed American Foundry / Desk Novelty Manufacturer. During the late 19th century, foundry manufacturers across the East Coast and Midwest produced standardized cast-iron desk novelties. These were often marked only with casting model numbers rather than full company names.
- Model / Casting Number: 4926. The identical number cast into the underside of both the base and the revolving cover confirms they were manufactured as a matched set in the foundry.
- Origin: United States. The labeling (STAMPS, FASTENERS, PENS, INK) along with the specific American style of cast-iron office novelties confirms its U.S. origin.
- Date of Manufacture: c. 1890s – 1905 The combination of relief scrollwork, functional rotary design, and specific compartment labeling (incorporating steel pen nibs, fasteners, and postage stamps) fits precisely into turn-of-the-century American office outfitting.
Key Features
- Rotary Access Mechanism: The top cover pivots around a central axis pin. A single cutout window in the lid rotates 360 degrees, allowing selective exposure to one of four internal wells at a time while keeping the remaining contents covered.
- Four Dedicated Well Compartments:
- STAMPS: A shallow, curved well for postage stamps.
- FASTENERS: Storage for pins, paper clips, brass fasteners, or thumb tacks.
- PENS: Sized specifically for loose steel dip pen nibs or small desk accessories.
- INK: Fitted with a circular clear glass insert.
- Built-in Pen Rest / Holders: The upper cover features two upright posts/hooks designed to cradle a dip pen or fountain pen horizontally across the top.
- Material & Finish: Heavy cast iron with a brass finish. The low relief features scrollwork and stylized botanical/trefoil motifs typical of cast metal desk accessories of the era.
