This cast iron owl’s wings spread out to form a pen tray, and the removable head (made with no hinge) reveals the metal inkwell insert (original to the piece). The markings “Iron Art” and “JM 146” are impressed on the underside.
“Iron Art” refers to a line of cast iron products that were popular in the mid-20th century. These items were often decorative and functional, ranging from inkwells to doorstops and other household items. The Iron Art Company was based in Philipsburg, New Jersey. The company gained popularity for its detailed and durable cast iron pieces, which were often inspired by Victorian designs and other historical motifs.
This inkwell made in the 1950’s quite possibly was cast using the same molds from around 1900 used by Bradley & Hubbard.
