This charming, folk-art-style inkwell is an example of Black Forest wood carving. It features a stylized, somewhat cartoonish bulldog or terrier with a charmingly “squashed” face, characteristic of the whimsical animal figures produced in the Alpine regions.

Description

  • Material and Craftsmanship: The piece is hand-carved from a dense, dark-stained hardwood (likely linden or walnut). It features bold, faceted chisel marks—known as “chip carving”—which give it that distinctively cartoonish, geometric appearance rather than a smooth, realistic finish.
  • The Eyes: One of its most striking features is the pair of oversized, inset glass eyes. These are typically “googly” style with white sclera and large black pupils, which significantly enhance the whimsical, expressive look.
  • The Mechanism: The head is hinged at the back of the neck with a simple brass hinge. When flipped open, it reveals the ink reservoir.

Origin and Age

  • Origin: This was likely made in Brienz, Switzerland, or the surrounding Black Forest region of Germany. While “Black Forest” is the catch-all trade name, the Brienz carvers were specifically famous for these anthropomorphic or whimsical animal inkwells (bears, dogs, and owls being the most popular).
  • Date: Based on the hinge style, the use of faceted chip-carving, and the glass eye type, this piece likely dates to the late 19th century or early 20th century (c. 1890–1920).
