This is a modern inkstand produced under the brand name Castilian. It is not an antique, despite often being sold as one. One finds these for sale internationally across the internet. One just sold on eBay (in July 2025) for $400. “Older” versions of this mass-produced inkstand are stamped on the bottom: “Castilian – Not for food purposes – For decorative use only.”

Description of the Inkstand

The inkstand is an ornate, double inkstand made of ceramic and cast metal with a brass-toned finish. The entire piece is designed to mimic a traditional antique style.

History of the “Castilian” Brand

The name “Castilian” is a brand used for a wide range of decorative home furnishings, often featuring a blend of cast metal and porcelain or glass. The products are reproductions and replicas of antique styles and are typically mass-produced.

  • Who made them? The pieces are made by a manufacturing company operating under the brand name Castilian. They are known for specializing in decorative items meant to look much older and more valuable than they are.
  • Where are they made? Production for these items is primarily based in China and other parts of Asia.
  • When did they start producing them? The brand’s production began in the late 20th century, likely in the 1980s or 1990s, to meet the demand for ornamental home decor that resembled genuine antiques. The markings on this inkstand—”Not for food purposes—for decorative use only”—are a clear indicator of its modern, ornamental nature.
