This inkstand features a vigilant owl perched atop a stack of books. The owl and books are made of bronze. In front of the owl, there’s an inkwell with a hinged lid. The base of the inkstand is made of polished black stone and includes curved indentations on either side, serving as pen trays. The piece is signed “H. Müller”.

Hans Müller (Austrian, 1873-1937) was born in Vienna, Austria on January 10, 1873. He was a pupil of Edward Hellmer at the Vienna Academe of Art. Although he is probably best known for his portraits and sculptural busts of the famous in Viennese society, he did create figurative sculptures as well as animals, mostly of hunting dogs. Many of his sculptural pieces are on permanent display in the Simu Museum in Bucharest, Hungary.
