Brass Double Inkstand with Dog

  • Material and Construction: The inkstand is made of brass. The base is rectangular. On either side of this rectangular base, there are integrated brass handles.
  • The Dog Figurine: The central, most prominent feature is a detailed figurine of a dog. The dog is sculpted in a sitting position. Based on its slender, elegant body, long, refined snout, and delicate legs, it is very likely a whippet or a similar sighthound breed like an Italian Greyhound. This dog figurine serves as a decorative handle for a lid that covers a central storage compartment.
  • Inkwells: On either side of the central dog and compartment are two circular glass inkwells. They are simple, faceted, and designed to be easily removed from their brass frames.
  • Lids: Each glass inkwell has its own separate, unattached brass lid, which simply rests on top. The larger, central lid for the storage compartment (which could hold nibs, stamps, or other small desk necessities) is integrated with the dog figurine; thus, lifting the dog lifts this central lid.
  • Markings: The underside of an inkwell’s lid is marked “England,” confirming the country of origin.
