This is a hand-carved Black Forest inkwell, rendered in the form of a sitting bear.

The inkwell is carved from wood, exhibiting the deep, rich brown patina that is typical of Black Forest carvings. The craftsmanship is evident in the detailed texture of the bear’s fur, which is suggested through skillful carving, and its expressive features, including its snout, eyes, and ears. The bear is depicted in a sitting posture, with a front paw resting on a base that forms part of the inkstand.

The design integrates the inkwell into the bear’s form: the bear’s upper body (from the shoulders upwards, including its head) is hinged, allowing it to lift upwards to reveal the inkwell compartment beneath. In front of the sitting bear, positioned on the base, is a recessed area that functions as a pen holder.
