This inkwell is carved in the form of a detailed dog’s head, made from a single piece of wood. The carving captures the details of the dog’s fur, floppy ears, and gentle expression. The eyes are striking – they are glass, giving the figure a lifelike gaze. The top of the dog’s head is hinged and opens to reveal the inkwell liner.
Dog Breed and Wood Type
Based on its floppy ears, long muzzle, and the texture of the fur, the dog is most likely a Spaniel or perhaps a Terrier breed with long, shaggy hair. The carving style and the dog’s features align with the popular hunting and companion dogs of that era.
The wood is consistent with the type traditionally used for Black Forest carvings, which is typically lindenwood (also known as lime wood or basswood). Linden is a light-colored, fine-grained wood that is ideal for carving intricate details without splintering, making it the perfect choice for the realistic fur and expressive features of this piece.
