Two examples of ebony and ivory Baradelle penners. Jean Jacques Louis Baradelle (1752-94) was a famous maker of scientific instruments for Louis XIV. He made many items including writing compendia, and these items became associated with his name.
The inkwell and wafer compartment form the base and these screw onto a storage section for tools (knife, small pen, pen nib). At the top is a rotating perpetual calendar in ivory. When unscrewed, it exposes a “hobnail” serrated ivory seal.
Estimated value: $200 each
