This inkstand features an anthropomorphic monkey dressed in an apron and hat, holding a pestle and appears to be grinding or crushing something inside an urn-like piece with fluted decoration which resembles a mortar. The “pestle” is the plunger to activate the bell incorporated to the underside of the inkstand. Unfortunately, the bell mechanism no longer works. The inkwell is found inside the bucket next to the monkey. The monkey’s coiled tail serves as a pen holder.
