This inkstand features an anthropomorphic monkey standing on cobblestone pavement in front of a heating kettle, holding a moveable pan with chestnuts. On one side of him is a woven square wire basket (for nibs, etc.) and a hand scoop. On the other side is a sign, difficult to read, but maybe says “LARRONS de LYON”. (Thieves of Lyon).
When the unattached cover is removed, one sees there are small holes at the bottom of the pan with the chestnuts. The pan is hinged and swivels open to access the inkwell.
