This whimsical porcelain inkstand depicts a bear engaged in scholarly pursuits. The inkstand is formed as a seated brown bear, wearing a white nightcap. The bear is positioned amidst a stack of books and papers.

  • The Bear: The bear is rendered in realistic brown tones with textured fur. It is seated with its legs crossed and appears to be reading. The white nightcap adds a touch of anthropomorphic humor to the figure.
  • The Books: Beside the bear is a stack of two books. The top book is primarily orange with yellow edges, and the lower book is primarily yellow with orange edges. The books serve as the inkwell.
  • Papers and Writing Implements: Scattered around the bear are white pieces of paper with horizontal lines, resembling writing paper or a newspaper. A black and brown pipe rests on one of the papers near the bear’s leg. A black dip pen with a brown handle also lies on the papers.
  • Base: The entire scene rests on an irregularly shaped base glazed in green.
  • French Headline: A portion of text is visible on one of the white papers beneath the bear. The headline appears to be in French.
