This advertising / promotional traveling inkwell was made for the Gerolsteiner Company. Founded on January 1, 1888, by Wilhelm Castendyck, Gerolsteiner Brunnen (German for “fountain” or “well”) began its journey in the town of Gerolstein, located in the Eifel mountains of Germany. The company started by filling its mineral water into clay jugs, and it quickly became known for its high natural carbonic acid content, which was a result of the water’s volcanic origin.

This metal inkwell was made in the form of the company’s clay jugs. The label on the inkwell translates to:

“Natural Mineral Water”

“Gerolsteiner Sprudel” (Sprudel = carbonated water)

“Protected Brand”

“To be stored lying down.”
