This is a World War I French inkwell in the form of a boar’s head with a big, fanged snout. He is wearing a Prussian helmet with the pointed Pickelhaube on top. The helmet hinges up exposing the inkwell. The boar’s head rests on rectangular base with a brass plate in front marked “Guillaume Tel”. “Deposé” is impressed on base in the rear.
A different version in color is also pictured. The brass plate on this piece is marked “Guillaume 1914 – 1917”.
This inkwell is a derogatory caricature of Kaiser William II, the last German Kaiser and King of Prussia from June 1888 until his abdication in November 1918, which marked the end of the German empire.
