Amethyst 8-Sided Umbrella Ink Bottle Marked “NY”

Categories Ink Bottle
Type Umbrella
Material Glass
Markings NY
Manufacturer Undetermined
Origin United States
Date or Era circa 1860
Measuring 2 ¾” tall

This amethyst 8-sided Umbrella ink bottle is marked on the bottom “NY”. It has a crude drippy lip and a long drip of glass on the inside going across the bottom.

The bottle stands 2 ¾” tall and has a 1” hairline crack (near the shoulder) and a ¼” surface chip (on the edge of the lip). The hairline crack could have formed from a tiny potstone in the glass at the time it was made. And what looks like a chip is actually a natural dip in the lip. It is hand-blown and dates around th 1860’s era. These flaws are common in early 1860’s era hand-blown ink bottles.
