This inkwell features a heavy, solid clear glass base with a hinged sterling silver collar and lid, topped by a cast sterling silver figurine of a racing hound (greyhound or whippet).

Design Details

  • Glass Base: Made from heavy, thick clear glass with a cube-like profile, smooth beveled edges, and a central well blown/cut directly into the body to hold the ink reservoir.
  • Sterling Silver Collar & Lid:
    • The silver collar is hinged.
    • The flat, polished silver lid lifts to access the ink.
    • Marked along the side of the collar with full English hallmarks:
      • Maker’s Mark: S & Co (Spooner Clowes & Co)
      • Standard Mark: Lion Passant (indicating sterling silver)
      • City Mark: Leopard’s Head (London assay office)
      • Date Letter: Lowercase “o” in a shaped shield (dating the piece to 1909)
  • Figurative Finial:
    • Mounted atop the lid is a detailed, solid-cast model of a standing racing hound wearing a fitted racing coat or blanket across its torso.
    • The figurine shows textured fur detailing along the legs, head, and tail, with a slender frame and curved tail characteristic of a greyhound or whippet.
