This is a stunning example of a late 19th-century octagonal “umbrella” ink bottle. Its vibrant color and exceptional clarity make it a standout piece.

Overview & Aesthetics

  • Shape: Classic umbrella style with an eight-sided (octagonal) body that tapers elegantly from a wide base toward a slender neck.
  • Color: A brilliant, vivid Lime Grass Green. The glass possesses a high degree of transparency and saturation, particularly striking when backlit, highlighting the depth of the green hues.
  • Glass Character: The glass is filled with charming “seeds” (tiny air bubbles) and slight cooling ripples, characteristic of antique bottle glass and providing wonderful texture and authenticity.

Technical Specifications

  • Height: 2 ⅝ inches.
  • Lip/Finish: A tooled lip with a slight flare and a rounded rim, showing the craftsmanship of the period.
  • Base: A smooth base without a pontil mark, suggesting a manufacture date in the latter half of the 19th century (post-1860s).
  • Surface: Remarkable “glassy” luster on both the interior and exterior. The surfaces are crisp and sparkling, indicating the bottle was likely a “closet find” rather than being recovered from the ground (not dug) or artificially cleaned (not tumbled).

Condition Report

  • General Grade: Outstanding “as made” condition.
  • Specifics: The piece retains its original manufacturing character with sharp edges and a clean neck.
  • Flaws: There is one tiny bruise located midway down one of the panel corners. This is a minor point of impact that does not detract from the overall structural integrity or the impressive shelf appeal of this rare-colored specimen.

Note: This specific shade of grass green is significantly more difficult to encounter than the standard aquamarine or amber varieties, making this a high-quality addition to a specialized collection.
