This is an exceptional and beautifully preserved example of Victorian ingenuity—a “multitool” for the 19th-century gentleman. Retailing through the prestigious Thornhill of New Bond Street, this 1876 traveling writing compendium packs an entire desk’s worth of utility into a pocket-sized, silver-framed box.
Design & Construction
The exterior is bound in its original cross-grained Morocco leather with sterling silver mounts. The mechanism is a delight: pulling back the hinged silver cover on the front reveals a spring-loaded button that releases the lid.
Inside, the box features a richly gilded (vermeil) interior that remains in stunning condition, showing very little signs of use.
Features & Ingenuity
The layout is a marvel of spatial efficiency:
- The Stand: The right-hand side folds out to create an upright stand for the pen and a spare lead case.
- The Candle: Once the pen stand is deployed, a candle socket on the left swings upward to provide light for late-night correspondence.
- The Inkwell: A central travel inkwell features a tension-spring lid designed to create a leak-proof seal during transit.
- Hidden Compartments: A tiny integrated drawer at the base holds postage stamps etc., while a small vesta (match) case doubles as a “go-to-bed” socket.
- The Pen/Pencil: The telescopic instrument is the highlight. It extends to full length and features a dual-action slider for both a dip pen and a lead pencil. The end is set with a blank bloodstone seal matrix, ready for a personal crest or monogram.
Hallmarks & Pedigree
The silver is fully hallmarked for London, 1876, with the maker’s mark WW over FD for the renowned silversmiths William Thomas Wright & Frederick Davies. The pen is stamped “THORNHILL,” confirming it was commissioned for Walter Thornhill & Co., a retailer famous for high-end luxury goods and royal patronage.
Condition: Excellent. The leather is supple, the gilding is bright, and all mechanical spring actions remain crisp and functional.
