This unusual inkstand was made in the form of a moose head. The antlers wrap around the animal’s pendulous muzzle to form a pen tray. A hinged glass inkwell fits in the back.
The piece is signed. The sculptor is M. Peinlich. The A Griffoul Bros. Foundry in Newark NJ made the piece in 1913.
Auguste Griffoul had operated a foundry in Paris where he made a cast of the Thinker for Auguste Rodin in 1896. By 1905 he had opened a foundry in Newark, NJ, reported to have been the last foundry in America using French sand.
