Cold-painted bronze inkstand depicts a crouching chimpanzee on a fringed Persian carpet approaching a walnut. The nut is hinged at the back and opens to access the inkwell.

Marked “Geschutzt Oesterreich, Deutschland, England” with a diamond maker’s mark.

I’ve never seen an item marked “patented” (Geschutzt) for three countries. Normally items made in Germany are marked “Germany”, not “Deutschland”. There is no wear to the paint. There is a “crack” on the underside. I suspect this piece may be of modern production (reproduction).

I paid $112 for this piece in September 2011. I have seen the same piece sell for over $500 in 2012 and 2013 on eBay.

This piece sold for £625 at Bonhams of London. Bonhams : Franz Bergman, Austrian (1861-1936) An unusual cold painted bronze inkwell depicting a chimpanzee with a nut made for the English market
