This marble double inkstand is an example of early Art Deco desk ware, most likely produced in France between 1910 and 1930.

Description

  • The Base: The inkstand is built upon a heavy, polished green marble plinth. A long, shallow pen groove is carved into the front of the marble to hold pens.
  • The Elephant Figure: A central figural sculpture of an elephant—often depicted in a recumbent pose with its trunk raised (a symbol of good luck)—is the centerpiece.
  • The Inkwells: Two matching inkwell reservoirs flank the elephant. Each features a hinged metal lid that echoes the textures of the base. Inside the wells are glass inserts.
  • Metalwork: The elephant and lids are crafted from patinated bronze.

Origin and Identification

Based on the combination of marble and figural animal, this piece is likely from:

  • France (Paris): This was the center of the Art Deco movement (c. 1920s–1930s). Renowned artists like Irénée Rochard, Louis-Albert Carvin, or the foundry Susse Frères specialized in these “animalier” desk sets.

Estimated Age

  • Art Deco (1920s–1930s): The design features a stylized elephant.
