The figural inkwell features:

  1. A large, central cabbage which serves as the body and base of the inkwell.
  2. Two rabbits positioned around the cabbage, seemingly guarding or eating it.

Materials and Construction

  • Material: Cast in bronze.
  • Finish/Patina: The casting is detailed, capturing the texture of the rabbits’ fur and the veins/folds of the cabbage leaves.
  • Inkwell Function:
    • The inkwell reservoir is contained within the large cabbage head.
    • The top portion of the cabbage, or a section of its leaves, acts as a hinged lid. The lid lifts to reveal the ceramic inkwell.

Figural Detail

  • The Rabbits: Two rabbits are prominently featured.
    • One rabbit is standing or sitting up on its haunches, appearing attentive or ready to nibble, positioned to the right of the cabbage head.
    • The second rabbit is crouched low, almost tucked behind the cabbage to the left. Both figures are anatomically detailed with recognizable features like long ears and body posture.
  • The Cabbage: The cabbage is the largest element, sculpted with thick, overlapping leaves to realistically replicate a head of brassica. The hinge mechanism is subtly integrated into the design.

Style and Context

  • Aesthetic: The piece is naturalistic. The theme of animals and nature was extremely popular, particularly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fitting well within the Victorian or Edwardian era of decorative arts.
