This miniature traveling inkwell is made from sterling silver by the renowned English silversmiths Sampson Mordan & Co. and dates to 1891.

  • Dimensions and Form: The inkwell is miniature, measuring approximately 1 ¼ inches in diameter and 2 ½ inches in height, making it a truly pocket-sized accessory. It has a cylindrical, bottle-like form.
  • Material and Decoration: The inkwell is made of sterling silver, confirmed by its hallmarks. Its entire outer surface is decorated with detailed repoussé and chased ornamentation, featuring a dense pattern of foliate and floral motifs, including blossoms and leaves. A small bird is also integrated into the design on one side.
  • Hinged Top: The inkwell has a hinged top. This top is monogrammed. Upon opening the hinged top, it reveals a threaded silver collar, into which the glass stopper is inserted.
  • Glass Stopper and Ink Reservoir: A clear glass stopper sits within the threaded silver collar. This stopper provides a secure seal for the ink reservoir located directly beneath it, a glass-lined interior.
  • Hallmarks: The silver is hallmarked with:
    • The mark for London, indicating its assay office.
    • A date letter corresponding to 1891, establishing its precise age.
    • The maker’s mark for Sampson Mordan & Co., a highly respected British manufacturer known for their high-quality silver, novelty items, and writing implements during the Victorian era.
