Pictured are two Black Forest woodcarvings, which, despite the name, originated in the town of Brienz, Switzerland, rather than Germany.
Origin & Craftsmanship
These pieces were likely made in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. During the 19th century, Brienz became the world center for this type of carving. The “Black Forest” name was a marketing term used because the carvings were often sold to tourists traveling through the Black Forest region of Germany.
- Material: These are typically carved from linden (lime) wood, which is soft and has a fine grain that allows for the detailed “fur” texture and expressive facial features seen here.
- Features: The glass eyes are a hallmark of higher-quality Brienz pieces, added to give the animal a more lifelike, “soulful” expression. The front channel is an integrated pen rest (or pen tray).
- Design: The scalloped or “beaded” edge along the front of the pen channel is a charming folk-art flourish common in late-19th-century designs. The base is expertly carved to resemble a rough-hewn log or trough. The original removeable glass inkwell or insert is missing.
Estimated Age
Based on the style, the brass hinge construction, and the realistic yet whimsical “Brienz Bear” aesthetic, these pieces date to the late 19th or very early 20th century (circa 1880–1910).
1st example (light wood) sold in March 2018 for $85.50.
2nd example (darker wood) sold for $363 in March 2026.
