19th Century Sheffield plate inkstand with two cut glass inkwells flanking a sculpture of a retriever hunting dog. On each side is a 1 ¾” square cut-glass inkwells with a cut starburst pontil and Sheffield plate cover. On the bottom of the claw footed base are five hallmarks. Three of the hallmarks are “JD&S” for the Sheffield silversmiths James Deakin & Sons, followed by an “EP” hallmark for electroplate, and then shape number “M2351.” The dog sculpture is still mounted with the original 19th century handmade wingnuts and “Sheffield” marked washers. The base of the inkstand is ornately decorated with a branch and leaf motif. The pen holder is shaped like crossed twigs.
