Three sitting puppies (“Trois Chiots”) are fascinated by an approaching snail. This patinated white metal sculpture is raised on a black marble base with white veining. The piece is signed “Georg Vacossin” and is marked with the foundry name (A. Mazet). A raised area of ground in front of the puppies is hinged, opening to access the inkwell.
Georges Lucien Vacossin (1870 ~ 1942) was a French sculptor who was born in Granvilliers (Oise) and exhibited at the Salon between 1902 and 1937. A master of canine sculpture, some of his dog groups were used for Sèvres factory models. Not a lot is known about this artist other than he specialized in bronze and ceramic animal sculptures.
